UKHSA has the capability to measure levels of airborne radioactivity. This can be measured on its own fixed High Volume Air Samplers in Oxfordshire and Glasgow, or from mobile air samplers which can be deployed to particular locations as required.

Example

The UKHSAs laboratory in Glasgow was the first in the UK to detect the global dispersal of radionuclides from the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan. This was confirmed by our Chilton laboratory a few days later and then by other government agencies. The results of the monitoring were collated and published.
