Who is the course aimed at?

This is a radiation safety course for those who work with open (unsealed) radioactive material. The course would be of interest to anyone working with liquid radioisotopes in laboratories, operators involved in industrial tracer studies or anyone working in an environment where enhanced levels of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) are a hazard.

Notes:

• Participants do not need any prior knowledge of radioactivity or radiation safety to benefit from this course.
• This course does not cover work in Radon atmospheres; please contact us for details if you are interested in this topic.

What is the course about?

This course is about restricting radiation exposure during work with open sources; why this is important and how it can be achieved in practice. The course provides an overview of the legal requirements affecting the worker or operator, and enables the participant to develop appropriate skills such as monitoring and contamination control.

What are the benefits of the course?

The learning outcomes for this course are that on completion, those attending:

• Understand the nature of radioactivity and can use the associated terminology.
• Understand the routes of exposure, the risks associated with radiation exposure and why these must be kept "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP).
• Are able to undertake their work in line with the ALARP principle.
• Understand the need to read, and work in accordance with, the employer's local rules and keep the relevant records up to date.
• Know what actions to take in the event of reasonably foreseeable incidents.

Course overview

The course runs over a full day and comprises interactive talks and group work. Presenters are selected from our pool of specialists and advisers, all of whom are familiar with the variety of work areas where open sources are used.
