Who is this course aimed at?

This is a Radiation Protection Supervisor course aimed at those responsible for diagnostic veterinary x-ray facilities. Veterinary surgeons, practice managers or senior nurses would find this course useful.

While those attending should have some appreciation for how their x-ray facility is used, no prior knowledge of radiation safety is assumed.

What is the course about?

This course teaches how a good standard of radiation protection can be achieved in veterinary practice. It focuses on standard diagnostic x-radiography in fixed installations and off-site. Nuclear medicine and radiotherapy aspects are not covered, although training in these areas can be provided separately (contact us for details).

What are the benefits of this course?

The learning objectives of this course are that those attending:

• Appreciate the nature of x-radiation and become familiar with radiation protection terminology;
• Recognise the risks associated with exposure to x-rays, and the legal requirement to keep radiation doses "as low as reasonably practicable" (ALARP);
• Understand how to put basic principles into practice to achieve ALARP;
• Become familiar with the relevant requirements of The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and how these impact on diagnostic veterinary x-radiography; and
• Understand the role of the Radiation Protection Supervisor

Course overview

The course runs over a full day and comprises interactive talks and group work. Presenters are selected from our pool of specialists and advisers, all of whom are familiar with radiation protection in diagnostic veterinary radiography.
