We are pleased to launch the 5th UK CT dose survey. This survey aims to collect protocol and patient dose index data for a range of common adult and paediatric CT examinations.

This survey is requesting data for the same 13 adult examinations as the 4th UK CT dose survey, as well as the 2 paediatric exams (split by age or weight) for which there are existing NDRLs. We are also asking for data for cerebral CT angiography (CTA) and CT perfusion (CTP) exams.

Data submitted should be contemporary and represent current practice, for examinations carried out in January 2024 or later, and only for scanners still in routine clinical use. Data submission is open until the end of May 2026. If it is considered that insufficient data has been received for any examination at this time, the date will be extended, and communicated via the medical physics mail base.

Unlike previous surveys, data can only be submitted as a summary from a local dose audit - we are not accepting individual patient dose information.

As data is being requested for a larger number of exams than previously, the number of parameters for which data is being has been significantly reduced. This should help participation easier and less time consuming. Data does not have to be submitted for all the requested exams if this is not possible.

For any queries please use the contact us button. The data collection form can be downloaded below.

Participation in this survey is endorsed by the Society and College of Radiographers. Participation may help support core outcomes 1,2,3,4,12,20 and 22 of CPD NOW.

Many thanks for your continued support for this important national dose collection initiative.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to submit data for at least 100 patients, if we are unable to be selective on patient size?

If you can't quite meet the sample size of 100 for any exam and are not able to be selective on the size of patients included in your submission, please do submit the data you are able to. This should be noted on the survey form that patient selection has not been carried out. This would be especially appreciated for exams new to this survey - CTA and CTP imaging.

Do you need any other statistical information provided as well as median doses?

If you can provide details of other statistical information, for example interquartile ranges or any outlier handling processes, please do add these but it is not required.

What type of CTA/CTP imaging should be provided?

Typically, these should be exams performed on patients following a stroke imaging pathway.

Can we submit paediatric chest exam data without weight information?

Patients must be selected based on weight and not age for paediatric body exams. If you are unable to obtain direct weight information but use a method to estimate the patient weight (eg. by using effective diameter (Deff) or size specific dose estimate (SSDE) information), please provide the dose data together with details of the method used to estimate patient weight so we can determine whether it would be possible to include the data in the survey.

You've asked for scan length data for each scan series - should this be the irradiated scan length or the imaged scan length (total length of image slices)?

The irradiated scan length would be preferred, but if only the imaged scan length is available this should still be provided.
