We are pleased to launch the 2026 UK patient dose dental survey. This survey aims to collect protocol and patient dose index data for specific routine examinations for both adult and child dental examinations imaged using Intraoral, panoramic, cephalometric, and dental CBCT radiography sets.

This survey is requesting data for the same standard adult and 12 year old child examinations as the 2017 UK patient dose dental survey, with the addition of two new adult CBCT exams.

Please only provide data for dental radiography sets that are still in routine clinical use. Data submitted should be contemporary and represent current practice, usually from records of typical dental exposures performed as part of routine quality assurance testing of dental radiography sets from January 2023 onwards.
The exception to this is for CBCT or Panoramic radiography sets that routinely use AEC, for which enter median DAP values from the most recent dose survey of ten or more patients performed on the set, ensuring that the set's DAP readings have been calibrated.

To make participation in the survey less time consuming, the number of parameters for which data are requested has been reduced for most of the standard examinations. Only a few parameters for each examination are designated as essential information. Data does not have to be submitted for all the examinations if that is not possible.

Data submission is open until the end of May 2026. If it is considered that insufficient data has been received for any examination at this time, the date will be extended and communicated via the medical physics mail base.

The data collection form can be downloaded below. Completed forms should be returned to UKHSA by emailing them to MedicalRadiationDoses@ukhsa.gov.uk.
