Once we have details about you and your work with ionising radiation we'll scope a level of service best suited to your needs and at a competitive price.

We pride ourselves on being an RPA Body that is able to meet all your Radiation Protection needs. For example combining our advisory and instrument testing services into one simple arrangement provides extra value and is very popular.

The services you need

Clients taking up our RPA service are offered a formal contract detailing the range of work that has been agreed; this contract also serves to document our appointment as RPA. A typical contract might include:

  • Advice and provision of appropriate personal dosimetry
  • Critical examinations in respect of new installations
  • Direct advice to management on legal and other matters
  • Provision of a 'Radiation Safety Management File' that helps to formalise the company's approach to radiation protection. In constructing this, assistance is provided in drawing up
    • Prior risk assessments
    • Local rules
    • Contingency plans
    • Radiation Protection Programmes

  • Radiation measurements to assess potential hazards and to control exposure of the workforce
  • Radiation protection training
  • Radiochemical analyses
  • Restorative action and dose assessment following accidents or incidents
  • Statutory testing of radiation monitors
  • Statutory tests for leakage of radioactive material from sealed sources

Please note that the scope of work is agreed with you, the client; it can be as simple - or as comprehensive - as you wish.

Related Legislation Guidance

In addition to advising on the application of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) we can also offer guidance and advice on the application of the following legislation:

  • The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016, as amended (EPR16)
  • The Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EASR18)
  • The Radioactive Substances Act 1993 and associated Exemption Orders and amendments (in Northern Ireland) (RSA93)
  • The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009, as amended (CDG09)

Flexible added services - tailored to you

Many of the features that are typical inclusions in our comprehensive RPA contracts are also offered as stand-alone services. If you would like further information on any of the services listed below please contact us.

Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA)

Companies transporting radioactive sources may need to appoint a DGSA. PHE provide full dangerous goods Advisory services. See the UKHSA DGSA pages.

Instrument Testing and Development

Radiation dose rate and contamination monitors are tested in accordance with the relevant standards. We also offer same-day testing, onsite testing of contamination monitors, and a basic repair service. An extensive radiation monitor design and development consultancy is also available.

Leak Testing of Radioactive Sources

Statutory leak tests can be carried out on radioactive sources. Leak test certificates are provided.

Non-ionising Radiation

Extensive expertise in the following areas of non-ionising radiation is available:

  • Use of lasers in the workplace
  • Artificial optical radiation including ultraviolet
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields including those from mobile phone base stations

Personal Dosimetry Service

Services available include the provision of dosemeters (appropriate to application) and a dose record keeping service approved by the Health and Safety Executive.

Radionuclide Analyses

Gamma spectroscopy is available for the determination of the radionuclide composition of samples. Gross alpha and beta counting and a comprehensive range of radiochemical analyses are also available.

Training
