Overview

This course will provide trainees with an understanding of the radiological impact assessment process for planned and potential releases from a nuclear facility and consider the application of the tools PC-CREAM and PACE in such assessments. To register on this course an email should be sent to PCCREAM@ukhsa.gov.uk by 1st August 2025. The cost of the training will be up to £5,800 per person, dependent upon the number of enrolments, and will be finalised at the end of the registration period.

 

Course Programme

Day 1 and 2: PC-CREAM training course

To include lectures, demonstrations and hypothetical practical exercises. The aim is to allow trainees to understand:

Data input requirements for PC-CREAM

Model assumptions

Source term characterisation

Model execution and results interpretation

How certain modules of PC-CREAM (e.g. marine dispersion model, DORIS), customised for European context, could be modified for other contexts.

Day 3: Practical application of PC-CREAM

Walk through an example UK Generic Design Assessment for new nuclear power stations including environmental permitting based on a case study of REIA for normal operation of a current PWR (we are currently unable to provide a source term for SMRs) Step by step interactive sessions to allow trainees to use PC-CREAM to carry out a dose assessment for this case study (to include humans and biota). This will cover:

Radiological impact assessment for routine operations

Development of a Conceptual model based on identification of all exposure pathways

Impact assessment on population and environment

Selection of representative persons, animals and plants and their software input considerations

Mock data for practical exercises

Day 4: Emergency preparedness and response

Introduction to assessment of potential exposures (based on IAEA GSG-10)

Case study-UK approach to assessing consequences of accidents

Demonstration of PACE - Level 3 Probabilistic Safety Analysis for Nuclear Facilities for atmospheric discharges and how it is used to calculate doses, health effects and impact of protective actions
