Course Programme

This two day training course provides an overview of PC-CREAM, a suite of models and data used to assess the radiological impact of routine discharges of radioactivity to the environment.

PC-CREAM comprises two main parts:

• Dispersion models - simulating the dispersion of radionuclides through the environment.
• ASSESSOR - estimating radiological doses from environmental concentrations.

Course content includes:

• Presentations on the scientific basis, data, and assumptions of each model.
• Demonstrations of how to run the dispersion models and the ASSESSOR module.
• Practical exercises.
• Analysis of results.

The course concludes with a full radiological impact assessment exercise to simulate the process required for a typical discharge authorisation and enable participants to test their understanding.

Delivered to a high standard, the course is supported by an equipped training facility and in-depth training materials. Participants will gain a good understanding of the models and methods used to calculate doses, and learn how to use PC-CREAM effectively. A certificate of completion is awarded to all attendees.

Extended Course Option (for additional fee)

The Extended PC-CREAM Course expands on the standard training with more information on the radiological impact assessment process, and how and why assessments are carried out in in the real-world.

Additional content includes a detailed case study of a radiological impact assessment for a nuclear power station. Topics include:

• Developing a conceptual site model
• Selecting appropriate dose assessment models
• Addressing uncertainty and variability
• Evaluating impacts on wildlife

The extended course concludes with presentations on radiological assessments in emergency scenarios and the post-incident recovery phase, including:

• Emergency planning assessments
• Probabilistic safety assessments
• Short-term atmospheric releases
• Long-term recovery strategies
