Overview

UKHSA is the UK's primary authority carrying out research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks from optical radiation. In addition we have been integral in establishing world leading laser and optical radiation safety standards.

Our courses are taught to a high standard, with learning is further supported by comprehensively equipped training venues and in-depth, reference quality printed course information. Everything is done to give students a detailed understanding and competency in the skills being taught.

Increasing exposure to risk

The human race has evolved under solar radiation. In more recent years, artificial optical radiation, and in particular ultraviolet and laser radiation, has found many new applications.

Many of these new uses increase the scope for the public to be exposed to the risks from these radiations. This course highlights public health issues and practical safety practices surrounding both new and old sources of ultraviolet and laser radiation.

Course Programme

All our courses are fully interactive and students are offered full support from our presenters throughout the day. The course includes discussions on:

• Basis Concepts of Optical Radiation: basic physical properties of optical radiations; overview of quantities and units; risk factors.
• Biological effects: on the skin and eyes from different types of optical radiations including ultraviolet, visible and infrared.
• Exposure Limits and Regulations: overview of exposure limits for the use of lasers and sunbeds, national legislation and safety standards.
• Sun and sunbeds: public health issues from exposures; practical protection measures; specific legislation and guidance.
• Effect lighting and laser displays: overview of different sources; exposure scenarios; laser light shows and assessment methodology; guidance.
• Laser pointers and other products: overview of sources available to the public; potential hazards and safety issues.
